Alternanthera ‘Round Leaf’ is a cultivated form of Alternanthera reineckii, a South American wetland species native to slow-moving, seasonally flooded habitats. This variant develops broader, rounder leaves than standard AR types, giving it a softer, fuller appearance while retaining the deep red to magenta coloration characteristic of the species.
Growth Behavior
A water-column-feeding stem plant with moderate growth speed. Produces dense, rounded foliage under adequate light. In lower light it may stretch and lose leaf width. Regular trimming promotes compact, bushy growth.
Size and Growth Form
Typically grows 8 to 12 inches tall depending on light, nutrients, and CO₂ availability. Forms upright stems with broad, rounded leaf pairs, creating a fuller silhouette than most Alternanthera cultivars.
Growth Habit Submerged and Emersed
Grows well both submerged and emersed. When grown emersed, it performs reliably in hanging pots over open aquariums or in setups where adequate humidity is provided. Emersed growth produces thicker stems and firmer leaves, with coloration intensifying under strong light.
