Description
Lagenandra Watermelon
Species Background
Lagenandra meeboldii is an aroid native to shaded forest streams, marsh edges, and seasonal floodplains of India and Sri Lanka. It grows in slow-moving or still water under heavy canopy cover, adapted to fluctuating water levels and low-light conditions.
‘Watermelon’ is a cultivated form selected for its broader leaves and subtle marbled patterning. This cultivar is produced in very limited quantities and is currently grown by only a small number of specialized nurseries, making it genuinely rare in the U.S. aquarium trade.
Growth Behavior
Lagenandra ‘Watermelon’ is a rhizome plant. New leaves emerge slowly from a horizontal rhizome rather than from stems or a crown. Growth is deliberate and steady rather than fast.
The rhizome must remain exposed. It should be attached to wood or stone, or positioned so only the roots contact the substrate. Burying the rhizome will cause rot.
Size and Growth Form
Leaves typically reach 4–7 inches tall, forming a low, spreading clump over time. The growth form stays grounded and broad rather than vertical, contributing to a settled, mature appearance. Fish often hover around the leaves, and biofilm readily develops along the surface.
Aquascaping Tip
Place near hardscape where its wide leaves contrast against stone or wood, adding a calm focal point without overwhelming the layout.
Water Parameters
• Temperature: 72–82°F
• pH: 6.0–7.5
• GH: 2–12
• KH: 0–6
This plant tolerates a wide range of modern aquarium conditions due to long-term cultivated adaptation.
Light Requirements
Low to medium light.
Low light results in slower growth and larger leaves. Medium light promotes slightly more compact growth. High light is unnecessary and may increase algae growth on leaf surfaces.
CO₂ Requirements
CO₂ is not required.
Supplemental CO₂ supports steadier growth and improved leaf condition but is optional.
Nutrient Requirements
Primarily a water-column feeder. Regular liquid fertilization is sufficient. Root tabs are not required.
Tank Placement
Foreground to midground near wood or stone. Suitable for nano tanks, community aquariums, and nature-style layouts.
Why Aquarists Keep It
Lagenandra ‘Watermelon’ is kept for its broad, textured leaves, calm growth habit, and ability to thrive under low light. Its limited availability and slow propagation make it a rare find in U.S. aquariums, valued by aquarists seeking uncommon, natural-looking plants.
Short Description
A rare, low-light rhizome plant with broad patterned leaves that brings a calm, natural presence to planted aquariums with easy care requirements.
