Description
Java Fern ‘Windelov’ (Microsorum pteropus ‘Windelov’)
Species Background
Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is native to Southeast Asia and is found attached to rocks and wood along shaded stream edges and river systems. ‘Windelov’ is a cultivated form selected for its crested, branched leaf tips and does not represent a separate wild species.
Growth Behavior
Epiphyte. Grows from a creeping rhizome that must stay above the substrate. Slow to moderate growth. Produces sturdy leaves that last a long time. Propagates by rhizome division and can also form small plantlets on older leaves in stable tanks.
Size and Growth Form
Height: about 6 to 10 inches
Spread: about 4 to 8 inches depending on attachment point and age
Form: upright, narrow leaves with distinctive crested tips that fork into fine fronds
Aquascaping Tip
Attach it to wood or stone in the midground where the crested tips add fine texture and a natural wild look without filling the tank with bulk.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 68 to 82 °F
pH: 6.0 to 7.8
GH: 2 to 15 dGH
KH: 0 to 8 dKH
Light Requirements
Low to medium. In stronger light it stays more compact and defined. In low light it grows slower and leaves can lengthen.
CO₂ Requirements
Not required. CO₂ can improve growth speed and leaf production, but it does not need it to thrive.
Nutrient Requirements
Mostly water column feeding. Performs best with consistent macros and micros in the water. Root tabs are not needed because it should not be planted in substrate.
Tank Placement
Midground or attached to hardscape. Best attached to driftwood, rock, or decor with the rhizome exposed.
Why Aquarists Keep It
Windelov is kept for its unique crested leaf tips, clean structure, and durability. It adds detail and texture to aquascapes, toler
