Description
Black Ram
Scientific name: Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (black color morph)
Species Background
The Black Ram is a selectively bred color morph of the German Blue Ram. It shares the same genetics and behavior as the classic form, with a deep, velvety black coloration developed through long term captive breeding. This is a fully tank adapted species commonly maintained in planted and community aquariums.
Behavior and Temperament
Peaceful and observant. Black Rams spend most of their time cruising the lower half of the aquarium, interacting with their environment and each other rather than provoking tankmates. Pairs may establish small territories, especially when spawning, but overall behavior remains calm and controlled.
Adult Size
Adults typically reach 2.5 to 3 inches.
Water Parameters
These ranges reflect modern tank bred husbandry and long term aquarium success.
• Temperature: 78 to 86°F
• pH: 6.0 to 7.5
• GH: 2 to 10 dGH
• KH: 1 to 6 dKH
Stable conditions are preferred. Consistency supports coloration, behavior, and overall health.
Diet
Omnivorous. Accepts high quality micro pellets and fine granules readily. Frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia are well suited and help maintain body condition and color.
Tank Requirements
A 20 gallon long or larger is appropriate for a pair. Fine substrate is preferred, with plants, wood, and stones used to create visual structure. Filtration should provide steady circulation and high oxygen levels, especially in warmer systems.
Why They’re Popular
Black Rams are valued for their rich coloration, compact size, and composed behavior. They integrate cleanly into planted aquariums and offer engaging cichlid behavior without dominating the tank.
