Description
Species Background
The German Blue Ram is a selectively refined form of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, originally native to the warm, slow-moving waters of the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia. While the wild form inhabits soft, acidic environments, decades of captive breeding have produced a tank-adapted fish that tolerates a wider range of water chemistry when stability is maintained. Modern German strains are fully tank-bred and no longer require extreme blackwater conditions to thrive.
Behavior and Temperament
German Blue Rams are peaceful, observant cichlids with mild territorial instincts, primarily expressed during spawning. Outside of breeding, they are calm, inquisitive, and focused on the lower half of the aquarium. They establish small personal zones but rarely escalate beyond brief displays. They are best kept as a bonded pair or in well-planned community tanks with non-aggressive species.
Adult Size
Adults typically reach 2.5–3 inches, with males slightly larger and more elongated than females. Most specimens sold are juveniles around 1–1.5 inches.
Water Parameters
These values reflect modern tank-bred tolerance, not outdated wild-only numbers.
-
Temperature: 80–86°F
Ideal range is narrow. Cooler water is the fastest way to stress this species. -
pH: 6.0–7.4
Tank-bred fish routinely thrive into the low-neutral range when stable. -
GH: 3–10 dGH
Upper range expanded to reflect captive breeding and long-term keeper data. -
KH: 1–6 dKH
Allows buffering without pushing into hard, alkaline conditions.
Stability matters more than hitting an exact number.
Diet
Omnivorous with a strong preference for protein. Feed a varied diet including high-quality micro pellets, frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, and occasional live foods. Consistent feeding supports coloration, immune health, and breeding behavior.
Tank Requirements
-
Minimum tank size: 20 gallons for a pair
-
Fine sand or smooth substrate preferred
-
Driftwood, leaf litter, and plant cover encouraged
-
Gentle to moderate filtration with strong biological capacity
-
Warm, stable water with good oxygenation
Why They’re Popular
German Blue Rams are popular because they combine vivid color, intelligent behavior, and true cichlid personality without the aggression of larger species. When kept warm and stable, they are engaging, interactive fish that reward attentive care with strong coloration and natural behaviors.
