Description

Species Background
The Polar Blue Parrot Cichlid is a selectively bred hybrid derived primarily from Central American convict-type cichlids. It was developed in the ornamental aquarium trade to combine the hardy genetics of convict cichlids with a distinctive powder-blue coloration and rounded parrot-like facial profile. Unlike larger blood parrot cichlids, Polar Blues remain compact and highly adaptable, making them suitable for moderately sized aquariums.

These fish retain much of the behavioral structure and durability of their convict ancestry, which explains their wide tolerance for typical home aquarium conditions.

Behavior and Temperament
Polar Blue Parrots are active, confident dwarf cichlids with the classic territorial instincts of Central American species. They are intelligent and interactive fish that quickly learn feeding routines and often respond to activity outside the tank.

While generally manageable compared to larger cichlids, they can become territorial, particularly when establishing breeding sites. They are best kept with similarly sized semi-robust community fish rather than very timid species.

Adult Size
Adults typically reach 3–4 inches in length, with males often growing slightly larger and developing more elongated finnage.

Water Parameters

Temperature
74–82°F

pH
6.5–8.2

GH
5–18 dGH

KH
3–12 dKH

These fish are highly adaptable and thrive in stable home aquarium conditions across a wide range of water chemistries.

Diet
Polar Blue Parrot Cichlids are omnivores with a strong appetite. A varied diet supports proper coloration and growth.

Suitable foods include:

• Quality cichlid pellets
• Frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia
• High-protein flakes
• Occasional vegetable-based foods or spirulina blends

Tank Requirements
A 20–30 gallon aquarium is suitable for a pair, while larger tanks are recommended for groups or mixed cichlid communities.

Provide structure with:

• Rock formations or caves
• Driftwood
• Open swimming areas

Like many Central American cichlids, they enjoy digging and rearranging substrate, so plants should be hardy or securely anchored.

Moderate filtration and consistent maintenance help maintain water quality for these active fish.

Why They’re Popular
Aquarists enjoy Polar Blue Parrot Cichlids for their unique coloration, compact size, and bold personality. They deliver the engaging behavior typical of Central American cichlids without requiring the large aquariums demanded by bigger species. Their resilience and adaptability also make them one of the easier cichlid varieties to keep successfully.
