Description

Species Background
Pearlscale goldfish are a classic fancy goldfish variety developed through selective breeding in East Asia. They are known for their distinctive spherical body and thick, domed scales that resemble small pearls. These specialized scales give the fish its name and create a textured, reflective appearance unlike any other goldfish type. Several color varieties exist including orange, red, calico, and metallic white.

Behavior and Temperament
Pearlscales are peaceful and slow-moving fancy goldfish. Their rounded body shape makes them poor swimmers compared to streamlined goldfish varieties, so they do best with other fancy goldfish that have similar swimming ability. They spend much of their time calmly exploring the tank and grazing for food.

Adult Size
Adults typically reach 5–6 inches in length. Because of their deep body shape they appear much larger and fuller than most fish of the same length.

Water Parameters
Temperature: 65–74°F
pH: 6.5–8.0
GH: 6–18 dGH
KH: 4–12 dKH

Diet
Pearlscale goldfish are omnivores. A high-quality sinking goldfish pellet or gel food should be the staple diet. They benefit from supplemental foods such as blanched vegetables, spirulina-based foods, and occasional protein treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp.

Tank Requirements
Due to their heavy body and limited swimming ability, pearlscales require a spacious aquarium with good filtration but moderate water flow. A 30-gallon aquarium for the first fish is recommended, with additional space for tankmates. Smooth décor and fine substrate help prevent damage to their delicate pearl-like scales.

Compatibility
They coexist well with other fancy goldfish such as orandas, ranchus, lionheads, and fantails. Avoid housing them with fast single-tail goldfish or aggressive fish that may outcompete them for food.

Why They’re Popular
Pearlscales are popular because their round body and raised pearl-like scales create one of the most distinctive textures seen in ornamental goldfish. Their unusual appearance and calm behavior make them a favorite among fancy goldfish keepers.
