Description

Gold Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi “Gold”)

Species Background
The Gold Neon Tetra is a selectively bred color morph of the classic Neon Tetra from the upper Amazon basin of Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. Unlike the wild form, the Gold variant has reduced dark pigmentation, which gives the body a pale golden tone while retaining the iconic electric blue stripe and red lower band. This morph was developed in captivity and is now widely bred in commercial hatcheries. Their small size, peaceful nature, and striking coloration have made them a staple schooling fish for planted aquariums.

Behavior and Temperament
Gold Neon Tetras are peaceful, schooling fish that thrive when kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals, though larger groups display the most natural behavior. They spend most of their time cruising mid-water and moving in synchronized groups. They coexist well with other small community fish and rarely show aggression.

Adult Size
Adults typically reach about 1.25–1.5 inches in length. Most specimens sold in the aquarium trade are 0.75–1.25 inches at the time of sale.

Water Parameters

Temperature

These tetras prefer soft, slightly acidic water but tank-bred individuals adapt well to stable community aquarium conditions.

Diet
Gold Neon Tetras are omnivores that accept a wide variety of small prepared and live foods. High-quality micro pellets or crushed flakes should form the staple diet. They also benefit from regular feedings of frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and finely chopped bloodworms to maintain color and condition.

Tank Requirements
A small school can be kept in aquariums of 10 gallons or larger, though larger tanks allow more natural schooling behavior. They show best coloration in planted aquariums with moderate lighting, dark substrate, and areas of open swimming space. Gentle filtration and stable water conditions are important for long-term health.

Compatibility
Compatible tankmates include other peaceful community fish such as small rasboras, dwarf corydoras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, and other small tetras. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive fish that may view them as food.

Why They’re Popular
These fish are popular because they combine the classic Neon Tetra look with a softer golden body tone that stands out beautifully in planted aquariums. Their tight schooling behavior, small size, and peaceful temperament make them an excellent choice for nano tanks and community aquascapes.
