Description

Species Background
Emerald Corydoras originate from slow-moving rivers and floodplain habitats across the upper Amazon basin in Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. Despite being commonly called a Corydoras, this species was historically placed in the genus Brochis due to its larger body size and higher dorsal fin ray count. The fish is known for its metallic emerald-green body that flashes under aquarium lighting. Most specimens in the aquarium trade today are captive bred.

Behavior and Temperament
Emerald Corys are peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish that spend much of their time foraging through the substrate. They are social fish and do best in groups of at least five or more, where they display more natural activity and confidence. They coexist well with nearly all peaceful community fish and rarely show aggression.

Adult Size
Mature individuals grow to about 3–3.5 inches, making them larger than most Corydoras species.

Water Parameters

Tank-bred Emerald Corys adapt well to a wide range of stable community aquarium conditions.

Diet
Emerald Corydoras are omnivorous scavengers that feed on sinking foods. High-quality sinking pellets or wafers should form the staple diet. They also benefit from frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, blackworms, and brine shrimp.

Tank Requirements
A 20-gallon or larger aquarium is recommended due to their larger size. Soft sand or smooth fine substrate is ideal to allow natural foraging behavior. Provide open bottom areas for feeding along with plants, driftwood, or rocks for cover. Moderate filtration and good oxygenation help keep them healthy.

Compatibility
They coexist well with peaceful community species such as tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, gouramis, and other Corydoras species. Avoid aggressive or very large fish that may harass bottom dwellers.

Why They’re Popular
Aquarists enjoy them for their shimmering emerald coloration, hardy nature, and active bottom-foraging behavior. Their larger size and bold metallic sheen make them a standout among Corydoras species.
