Description
Species Background
The Pea Puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus), also called the Dwarf Pea Puffer, is one of the smallest pufferfish in the world. This fully freshwater species is native to slow-moving rivers, streams, and heavily vegetated wetlands in southwestern India.
In the wild they inhabit dense plant growth and shallow areas rich with small invertebrates. Their natural habitat is filled with roots, leaf litter, and aquatic vegetation where they spend their time hunting tiny prey.
Behavior and Temperament
Pea puffers are highly curious and intelligent fish with surprisingly bold personalities for their size. They spend much of their time exploring the aquarium, inspecting plants and decorations while searching for food.
Despite their small size, they can be territorial, especially toward their own species. Heavily planted aquariums with broken sightlines help reduce aggression when keeping multiple individuals.
Adult Size
Adults typically reach 0.8–1 inch in length.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 74–80°F
pH: 6.5–7.8
GH: 4–12 dGH
KH: 2–8 dKH
Diet
Pea puffers are carnivorous micro-predators that prefer live or frozen foods.
Suitable foods include:
-
Bloodworms
-
Brine shrimp
-
Daphnia
-
Frozen mysis shrimp
-
Small pest snails
Snails are particularly beneficial because they help naturally wear down the puffer’s continuously growing teeth.
Tank Requirements
Minimum tank size: 5 gallons
A well-suited aquarium should include:
-
Dense live plants
-
Moss, roots, and driftwood
-
Plenty of visual barriers
-
Gentle to moderate filtration
Plant-heavy aquariums allow these fish to exhibit their natural hunting behavior.
Suitable Tankmates
Pea puffers are often best kept in species-only aquariums due to their hunting instincts and occasional fin-nipping behavior.
In larger planted tanks, possible companions may include:
-
Small rasboras
-
Otocinclus catfish
-
Amano shrimp
Why They’re Popular
Pea puffers are popular because they combine the personality and intelligence of larger puffers with a size small enough for nano aquariums. Their expressive eyes, constant curiosity, and active hunting behavior make them one of the most entertaining freshwater fish available.
