Description

Species Background
The Blue Dwarf Gourami is a selectively bred color form of Trichogaster lalius, a species native to slow-moving rivers, ponds, and flooded fields in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. In the wild they live in warm, vegetation-rich waters with little current. Selective breeding has intensified the species’ natural blue coloration, producing fish with bright turquoise bodies and subtle red or orange accents in the fins. Like other gouramis, they possess a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric oxygen and they will regularly visit the surface to gulp air.

Behavior and Temperament
Blue Dwarf Gouramis are generally peaceful and well suited to community aquariums. Males can show territorial behavior toward other male gouramis, particularly in smaller tanks, but they rarely bother unrelated species. They typically occupy the middle and upper areas of the aquarium and move slowly through plants and open water.

Compatible tankmates include tetras, rasboras, Corydoras catfish, small peaceful barbs, dwarf cichlids, and livebearers. Keeping multiple males together is best avoided unless the aquarium is large and heavily planted.

Adult Size
Adults typically reach about 3–3.5 inches in length.

Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.8
GH: 3–12 dGH
KH: 2–8 dKH

Diet
Blue Dwarf Gouramis are omnivores and readily accept a wide range of foods. A varied diet helps maintain health and coloration. Good feeding options include quality pellets or flakes along with frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They will also accept small live foods.

Tank Requirements
A 10–20 gallon aquarium or larger works well for a single fish or a pair. They thrive in aquariums that provide dense plants, floating plants, gentle filtration, and calm water movement. Floating vegetation helps them feel secure and mimics the quiet surface cover they experience in nature.

Why They’re Popular
Blue Dwarf Gouramis are popular because they combine striking color with manageable size and generally peaceful behavior. Their bright metallic blue patterning stands out strongly in planted aquariums and makes them a natural focal point in smaller community tanks.
