Description
Species Background
Betta ibellis is a wild betta species native to Southeast Asia, particularly peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand. Unlike many ornamental bettas that have been heavily line-bred for extreme finnage, Betta ibellis remains much closer to its natural form. These fish inhabit slow-moving forest streams, peat swamps, and shallow blackwater habitats rich in leaf litter and submerged roots. Their natural environment typically contains tannin-stained water and dense plant cover.
Behavior and Temperament
Betta ibellis are significantly more peaceful than typical domesticated Betta splendens. While males still establish territories, aggression is moderate and manageable in appropriately structured aquariums. A bonded pair often coexists well when provided with plants, driftwood, and visual barriers. They are calm, curious fish that spend much of their time exploring mid and upper water levels.
Adult Size
Adults typically reach about 2 to 2.5 inches in length.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–82°F
pH: 5.0–7.5
GH: 1–10 dGH
KH: 0–4 dKH
Betta ibellis originates from soft, acidic habitats but adapts well to stable aquarium conditions within these ranges.
Diet
Carnivorous micropredators that thrive on a varied diet. Quality betta pellets, insect-based granules, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and live foods all work well. Feeding a varied diet helps maintain color, condition, and breeding readiness.
Tank Requirements
A 10-gallon or larger aquarium works well for a pair when heavily planted. Dense plants, floating cover, driftwood, and leaf litter help recreate their natural environment and reduce territorial tension. Gentle filtration and calm water are preferred since these fish evolved in slow-moving habitats.
Why They’re Popular
Betta ibellis are popular with aquarists who appreciate natural wild betta species. They display subtle but beautiful coloration—deep brown bodies with iridescent blue highlights and red in the fins—along with far calmer behavior than common bettas. Their manageable temperament and fascinating breeding behavior make them a favorite among enthusiasts who want something more natural than typical ornamental betta strains.
