Description
Background
Rili Cull Shrimp are Neocaridina shrimp that come from Rili breeding colonies but display patterns that fall outside strict selective breeding standards. Instead of the classic, clean Rili banding, these shrimp show a wide variety of red, clear, speckled, and wild-type combinations. While they may not meet the visual standards for high-grade Rili shrimp, they are just as hardy, active, and useful in the aquarium.
These shrimp are excellent additions to planted tanks where their constant grazing helps keep surfaces clean. They spend most of their time moving through plants, moss, and substrate searching for biofilm, leftover food, and algae. Because they come from mixed patterns, they often create a lively and natural look in the aquarium with different color variations appearing throughout the group.
Rili Cull Shrimp are especially popular in shrimp colonies where appearance is less important than activity and function. Many aquarists use them as algae and detritus cleaners in planted community tanks or as starter shrimp for learning Neocaridina care.
Appearance
These shrimp show mixed coloration and patterning that may include:
• Partial Rili banding
• Red patches with clear sections
• Speckled or mottled patterns
• Wild-type brown or transparent tones
Because they come from cull groups, each shrimp can look slightly different. Expect variety rather than uniformity.
Behavior
Like other Neocaridina, these shrimp are peaceful, social scavengers that do best in groups. They spend the day grazing on surfaces, plants, and substrate while interacting with each other throughout the aquarium.
They are active but not aggressive and coexist well with other peaceful nano fish and shrimp species.
Aquarium Care
Tank size: 5 gallons or larger
Temperature: 68–78°F
pH: 6.5–7.8
Water hardness: Moderate hardness preferred
Diet: Biofilm, algae, shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables
Planted aquariums with moss, wood, and leaf litter provide ideal grazing surfaces and hiding places. Stable water parameters are helpful for long-term colony success.
Why People Keep Them
• Hardy and beginner-friendly
• Active scavengers that help clean the tank
• Great for planted aquariums and shrimp colonies
• Natural variety of colors and patterns
Rili Cull Shrimp offer the same durability and activity as selectively bred Neocaridina while bringing a more natural and varied appearance to the aquarium.
