Description

Species Background

Native to Brazil, Staurogyne repens grows along riverbanks where water levels rise and fall seasonally. It naturally adapts between submerged and emersed conditions, which makes it a stable and reliable aquarium plant.

Growth Behavior

A low-growing stem plant that spreads laterally while producing short vertical shoots. With trimming, it forms a dense, bushy carpet.

Size and Growth Form

Grows approximately 2–4 inches tall with a compact, creeping structure. Forms thick clusters that create a soft, natural foreground.

Aquascaping Tip

Plant in small clusters spaced slightly apart—this allows it to spread and merge into a seamless carpet over time.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 68–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.5
GH: 2–12
KH: 1–6

Light Requirements

Medium to high light produces the most compact growth. Lower light leads to taller, looser structure.

CO₂ Requirements

Not required but highly beneficial. CO₂ significantly improves density and growth speed.

Nutrient Requirements

Feeds from both the substrate and water column. Performs best with a nutrient-rich base and supplemental fertilization.

Tank Placement

Foreground to midground. Excellent for carpeting or forming low, structured bushes around hardscape.

Why Aquarists Keep It

Valued for its clean green color, manageable growth, and ability to create a polished aquascape while offering shelter for shrimp and small fish.
