Description
Species Background
Bacopa monnieri grows across warm wetlands in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Americas. It naturally inhabits marsh edges, rice paddies, and slow, shallow streams. The plant is amphibious, thriving both submerged and emersed, which explains its toughness and reliability in aquarium settings.
Growth Behavior
This plant grows as an upright stem species with rounded leaves arranged opposite each other at each node. It responds well to trimming, roots quickly from cuttings, and forms thick, bright green stands when maintained regularly.
Size and Growth Form
Typical aquarium height ranges from 6 to 14 inches. Stems grow straight upward with moderate branching. Customers can expect multiple rooted stems or fresh cuttings depending on the current harvest.
Water Parameters
Temperature 68 to 82°F
pH 6.0 to 7.5
GH 3 to 10
KH 2 to 6
Light Requirements
Performs best in medium to high light. In lower light the stems stretch and spacing between leaves increases. Under stronger light it stays compact with tighter leaf nodes.
CO2 Requirements
CO2 is optional. With supplementation, growth tightens and leaves become more lush, but the plant grows well without it.
Nutrient Requirements
Feeds primarily from the water column. Liquid fertilizers help maintain color and steady growth. Root tabs are optional but can help anchor stems in loose substrate.
Tank Placement
Best suited for the background. Works well behind shorter plants to create a bright green vertical accent.
Why Aquarists Keep It
Aquarists appreciate its adaptability, fast response to trimming, and clean, upright form. It’s dependable for beginners and versatile enough for aquascapers who want a structured, easy stem that fills space predictably.
