Description
Agassiz’s Corydoras
(Corydoras agassizii)
Species Background
Agassiz’s Corydoras is a South American freshwater catfish native to slow moving tributaries and floodplain systems where fine sediments, leaf litter, and submerged vegetation dominate. The species is adapted to soft substrates and variable oxygen conditions, using both gills and atmospheric air when needed. Individuals offered in the aquarium trade are tank acclimated and well suited to long term captive care.
Behavior and Temperament
Peaceful, social, and consistently active. This species is a classic schooling Corydoras and should be kept in groups to exhibit natural behavior. They spend most of their time cruising the substrate in loose formation, pausing to sift sand and inspect surfaces. No aggression, no fin nipping, no territorial behavior. Their constant motion makes them easy to observe and engaging in planted and community aquariums.
Adult Size
Adults typically reach approximately 2.5 inches.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 72–80°F
pH: 6.2–7.6
GH: 2–12 dGH
KH: 1–8 dKH
Water stability is prioritized over exact numerical targets.
Diet
Omnivorous bottom feeder. Accepts sinking pellets, wafers, frozen foods, and finely sized prepared foods. A varied diet supports long term health. Do not rely solely on leftover fish food.
Tank Requirements
A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a proper group. Fine sand or smooth substrate is strongly preferred to protect barbels. Gentle to moderate filtration with good oxygenation works best. Driftwood, plants, and shaded areas encourage natural foraging and schooling behavior.
Why They’re Popular
Agassiz’s Corydoras are valued for their nonstop activity, peaceful temperament, and high visibility along the substrate. They add constant movement to the lower levels of the aquarium while remaining compatible with a wide range of community fish.
