Description

Species Background
The Albino Heckelii Geophagus is a selectively bred color variant of Geophagus heckelii, a South American eartheater cichlid native to the Amazon and Rio Negro river systems. In the wild these fish inhabit slow-moving rivers, sandy floodplains, and submerged root systems where they sift substrate for food. The albino form retains the same behavior and care requirements as the wild type but displays pale cream to white coloration with pink or red eyes due to reduced pigmentation.

Behavior and Temperament
Heckelii Geophagus are generally peaceful for a cichlid of their size but remain true cichlids with a defined social hierarchy. They spend much of their time sifting sand through their gills in search of food. Adults are active bottom-oriented fish that do best in groups and establish loose dominance structures rather than constant aggression. They coexist well with medium to large peaceful fish that tolerate warm water and appreciate open swimming space.

Adult Size
Adults typically reach 8–10 inches, with males occasionally growing slightly larger and developing longer fins as they mature.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 78–86°F
pH: 5.5–7.5
GH: 1–10 dGH
KH: 0–5 dKH

These fish originate from soft, warm Amazonian waters and thrive when the aquarium remains stable.

Diet
Geophagus are omnivorous substrate sifters that feed on small invertebrates, detritus, and organic material in nature. In aquariums they accept high-quality sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter. Because they constantly sift substrate, foods that sink to the bottom work best.

Tank Requirements
A spacious aquarium with a fine sand substrate is essential because these fish naturally sift sand through their gills while feeding. Sharp gravel should be avoided. Tanks should include open swimming areas along with driftwood or rock structures for visual boundaries. Strong filtration and warm, stable water conditions are important due to their size and active feeding habits. Larger aquariums allow their natural social behavior to develop properly.

Why They’re Popular
These fish are popular because they combine the engaging personality of larger cichlids with relatively peaceful behavior. Their constant sand-sifting activity makes them fascinating to watch, and the albino coloration adds a rare and striking visual contrast compared to the wild form.
