Description

Alternanthera reineckii ‘Rosaefolia’

Species Background
Alternanthera reineckii is native to tropical and subtropical wetlands of South America, where it grows along shallow margins, seasonally flooded areas, and slow-moving water. ‘Rosaefolia’ is a cultivated ornamental form selected for its rich pink to red coloration and attractive leaf shape.

Growth Behavior
Stem plant. It grows upright with paired leaves along the stem and responds well to trimming, which encourages bushier side growth. It feeds primarily from the water column but also benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate.

Size and Growth Form
Typically reaches about 8 to 16 inches tall, sometimes taller in favorable conditions. It forms vertical stems with a moderately bushy habit when trimmed regularly.

Aquascaping Tip
Best used as a colorful midground to background accent where its pink-red tones can contrast against green plants, stone, or driftwood.

Water Parameters
Temperature: 72–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.5
GH: 3–12 dGH
KH: 1–8 dKH

Light Requirements
Medium to high light.

CO₂ Requirements
Helpful and strongly recommended for best color, fuller growth, and tighter internodes.

Nutrient Requirements
Benefits from regular fertilization, especially iron and micronutrients. A nutrient-rich substrate is helpful, though water column feeding remains most important.

Tank Placement
Midground to background.

Why Aquarists Keep It
Aquarists keep ‘Rosaefolia’ for its striking pink-red coloration, elegant leaf shape, and ability to create a vivid focal point in planted aquariums. It adds warmth, contrast, and a more dramatic look to aquascapes.
