Description
Amano Shrimp
Caridina multidentata
Species Background
Amano Shrimp are native to freshwater streams and rivers of Japan and Taiwan, with a life cycle that includes a brackish larval stage. They are a true wild species in the aquarium trade and are best known for their role in controlling algae rather than ornamental coloration.
Behavior and Temperament
Peaceful, active, and constantly grazing. Amano Shrimp coexist well with other non-aggressive fish and invertebrates. They are social and perform best when kept in small groups.
Adult Size
Adults typically reach 1.75–2 inches.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 68–78°F
pH: 6.0–7.8
GH: 3–12 dGH
KH: 2–8 dKH
Diet
Omnivorous grazer. Feeds on biofilm and algae, but should be supplemented with sinking shrimp foods, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables to maintain body mass.
Tank Requirements
Minimum tank size: 10 gallons for a small group.
Well-oxygenated water with stable parameters is preferred. Planted tanks with hardscape provide grazing surfaces and shelter.
Why They’re Popular
Amano Shrimp are valued for their effectiveness at algae control, larger size compared to dwarf shrimp, and compatibility with peaceful community aquariums.
