Description
Blue Turquoise Discus (Symphysodon sp.)
Short Description
A striking Blue Turquoise Discus measuring 4.5–5 inches, showing strong body shape and bright turquoise patterning. This nearly mature specimen already displays the elegant round profile and calm temperament that make discus the centerpiece of serious aquarium displays.
Species Background
The Blue Turquoise Discus is a selectively bred variety derived from wild Symphysodon species native to the Amazon Basin. Wild discus inhabit slow-moving, warm tributaries with dense vegetation and stable water conditions. Over decades of careful breeding, aquarists developed the Blue Turquoise strain to emphasize vivid blue striping across the body and fins while maintaining the classic round discus form. Modern aquarium strains are tank-bred and far more adaptable to stable home aquarium conditions than wild-caught discus.
Behavior and Temperament
Discus are peaceful cichlids known for their calm swimming behavior and social nature. They do best when kept in small groups where a natural hierarchy forms. While mild dominance can occur within the group, they are generally gentle fish that coexist well with other quiet, warm-water species.
Adult Size
Mature individuals typically reach 6–8 inches in diameter.

Diet
Discus require a high-quality, protein-rich diet to maintain body mass and coloration. Premium discus pellets, frozen bloodworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialized discus formulations all work well. Regular feeding with varied foods supports strong growth and vibrant coloration.
Tank Requirements
A 75-gallon aquarium or larger is recommended for a group of adult discus. These fish thrive in clean, stable aquariums with strong biological filtration and frequent water changes. Provide open swimming space with plants or vertical structure for security. Because discus prefer warmer temperatures, tankmates must tolerate tropical conditions.
Why They’re Popular
Blue Turquoise Discus are prized for their intense turquoise striping and classic discus shape, making them one of the most recognizable and sought-after varieties in the hobby. Their calm demeanor, graceful movement, and vibrant coloration allow them to serve as the centerpiece fish in planted or display aquariums.
