Description

Species Background
The Bolivian Ram, Mikrogeophagus altispinosus, is a South American dwarf cichlid native to the Rio Mamoré drainage in Bolivia and Brazil. In nature they inhabit slow-moving streams, shallow floodplains, and sandy-bottomed margins with scattered wood and leaf litter. Unlike the more delicate German Blue Ram, Bolivian Rams tolerate a wider range of aquarium conditions and are considered one of the most reliable dwarf cichlids for long-term success in home aquariums.

Behavior and Temperament
Bolivian Rams are peaceful and intelligent fish with a calm, curious personality. A compatible pair will often explore the tank together, gently sift through sand, and investigate rocks and wood. They may establish a small territory, particularly if spawning behavior begins, but aggression is usually mild and short-lived. They coexist well with other peaceful fish and are often described as quiet tank diplomats.

Adult Size
Adults typically reach about 3 inches.

Water Parameters
Temperature: 74–80°F
pH: 6.0–7.8
GH: 3–12 dGH
KH: 1–6 dKH

Diet
Bolivian Rams are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet. High-quality pellets or micro granules should form the staple, supplemented with frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. Occasional live foods can help bring out natural feeding behavior and improve condition.

Tank Requirements
A tank with fine sand or smooth substrate is ideal because these fish naturally sift the bottom while searching for food. Driftwood, stones, and scattered plants create structure while leaving open swimming areas. Gentle filtration and stable water conditions are far more important than chasing exact parameter numbers.

Why They’re Popular
Aquarists enjoy Bolivian Rams for their calm temperament, interesting pair behavior, and durability compared to other dwarf cichlids. They provide the personality and intelligence of a cichlid while remaining suitable for many peaceful community aquariums.
