Dwarf Sagittaria (Sagittaria subulata) is a classic grass-like aquarium plant native to freshwater habitats in the Americas, where it grows in shallow wetlands, marsh edges, streams, ponds, and other calm water areas. It is a true aquatic plant that can grow in both emersed and submerged conditions, which is one reason it has remained such a reliable staple in planted aquariums.
In the aquarium, Dwarf Sagittaria grows from a rooted crown and spreads by runners, gradually forming grassy patches through the substrate. It can be used as a foreground plant when trimmed and managed, but its natural height also makes it useful as a midground or background plant where it can grow taller without constant maintenance. Its narrow green leaves give the tank a natural meadow-like look with soft movement and coverage.
Dwarf Sagittaria is a strong choice for low-tech planted tanks because it roots well, spreads over time, and gives fish, shrimp, and fry extra cover near the substrate. It works especially well for aquarists who want a hardy grass-style plant that can be shaped low with trimming or allowed to grow into a taller planted backdrop.
