Fancy Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are selectively bred livebearers descended from wild guppies native to northeastern South America, including parts of Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, northern Brazil, and nearby Caribbean islands. In the wild, guppies are highly adaptable fish found in shallow streams, drainage ditches, ponds, springs, canals, and slow-moving margins where plant cover, leaf litter, and seasonal water changes shape their survival.

Male Fancy Guppies have been developed through long-term selective breeding for body color, tail shape, pattern, metallic sheen, and fin presentation. Males stay smaller than females but usually show stronger color and more dramatic tails, with each fish carrying its own variation in pattern. Their livebearing biology also gives them active, alert behavior, with most of their movement taking place through the upper and middle levels of the aquarium.

Fancy Guppies are peaceful community fish that work best with calm tank mates that will not chase or nip fins. They are a good fit for small planted aquariums, beginner community tanks, and mixed livebearer setups where their color and movement can stand out without needing aggressive feeding competition or large-tank space.
