Glass Catfish (Kryptopterus vitreolus) are transparent schooling catfish native to peninsular and southeastern Thailand, especially coastal river basins draining into the Gulf of Thailand. They are associated with slow-moving streams and river habitats where plant cover, subdued light, and group movement help them stay secure.

Their clear body, visible internal structure, and long sensory barbels make them one of the most recognizable freshwater oddball community fish. The aquarium trade species was historically confused with other Kryptopterus species, but the commonly kept glass catfish is now recognized as Kryptopterus vitreolus.

Glass Catfish do best in groups, where they hover together in open water and feel more confident around peaceful tank mates. They fit well in planted community aquariums with calm fish, gentle flow, and enough cover to reduce stress without hiding their natural schooling behavior.
