Description

Species Background
Java Fern is native to Southeast Asia, where it grows along shaded streambanks, attached to wood and rock in moving water. Trident is a cultivated form selected for its narrower, finely divided leaf shape, which gives it a more delicate and textured look than standard Java Fern.

Growth Behavior
This is a slow-growing epiphyte that should be attached to wood, stone, or other hardscape rather than buried in the substrate. It feeds mostly from the water column and spreads gradually by rhizome growth, with older leaves sometimes producing small plantlets.

Size and Growth Form
Trident Java Fern usually reaches about 6 to 10 inches tall, sometimes a bit more in mature setups. It has narrow, branching leaves with a graceful, slightly wild look that adds movement and texture without becoming bulky.

Aquascaping Tip
Attach it to driftwood or stone in the midground where its branching leaf shape can soften hardscape and add a more refined, natural texture.

Water Parameters
Temperature: 68–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.5
GH: 3–12 dGH
KH: 2–8 dKH

Light Requirements
Low to medium light. Too much light can encourage algae on the leaves, while lower light keeps it steady and easy.

CO₂ Requirements
CO₂ is not required, but it can improve growth rate and overall fullness.

Nutrient Requirements
Primarily a water column feeder. A good all-purpose liquid fertilizer is usually enough. Root tabs are not important unless nearby plants need them.

Tank Placement
Midground or background on wood or stone. It also works well in shaded areas of the aquarium and in nature-style layouts.

Why Aquarists Keep It
Aquarists keep Trident Java Fern because it is hardy, elegant, and easy to care for. Its finely divided leaves add a more detailed, upscale look than standard Java Fern, while still providing natural cover for shrimp and small fish.
