Description

Species Background
The Kaleidoscope Peacock is a selectively bred hybrid within the Aulonocara group of Lake Malawi cichlids. These fish were developed through controlled breeding programs to combine multiple color traits from different peacock strains, resulting in individuals that display a mix of reds, oranges, yellows, and metallic blues.

Like other Aulonocara species, their ancestry traces back to the sandy transition zones of Lake Malawi where peacock cichlids hunt small invertebrates in the substrate using specialized sensory pores on their heads. Modern Kaleidoscope strains are entirely tank-bred and widely appreciated for their constantly shifting coloration.

Behavior and Temperament
Kaleidoscope Peacocks are generally peaceful compared to many African cichlids. Males may establish small territories and display to one another, but serious aggression is uncommon when adequate space is provided.

They coexist well with other moderately peaceful Malawi cichlids including peacock cichlids and many Haplochromine species. Avoid housing them with highly aggressive Mbuna or extremely timid community fish.

Adult Size
Adults typically reach 5–6 inches, with males growing larger and displaying more intense coloration than females.

Water Parameters
Temperature: 76–82°F
pH: 7.4–8.6
GH: 8–20 dGH
KH: 6–12 dKH

Diet
Kaleidoscope Peacocks are carnivorous micro-predators that feed primarily on small invertebrates. In aquariums they readily accept high-quality prepared foods.

Recommended foods include high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, and other protein-rich foods. Feeding a varied diet helps maintain strong coloration and body condition.

Tank Requirements
A 55-gallon aquarium or larger is recommended for adult specimens. Provide open swimming space with rock formations or caves that allow fish to establish territories and retreat when needed.

A sandy or fine substrate is preferred and reflects the natural environment of Aulonocara species that sift through sand while feeding. Strong filtration and consistent water quality are important for long-term success.

Why They’re Popular
These fish are popular because each individual displays a unique combination of colors that can shift as they mature. Their relatively peaceful temperament, manageable adult size, and striking coloration make them a favorite centerpiece fish in Malawi cichlid aquariums.
