Species background
Madagascar lace leaf is a true aquatic bulb plant native to cool, clear rivers and seasonal waterways in Madagascar. In the wild it experiences noticeable water movement, high oxygen levels, and seasonal shifts that influence its growth cycle. Its iconic lattice leaves are a natural adaptation, not a cultivated trait.

Growth behavior
This is a true bulb plant. Leaves emerge directly from the bulb and unfurl slowly. Growth is deliberate and structured, not fast or sprawling. It does not creep, branch, or spread laterally. The plant follows a biological growth cycle and may periodically rest if conditions drift too warm or unstable.

Size and growth form
Leaves typically reach 12 to 24 inches in length, sometimes longer in deep tanks. The form is tall, open, and architectural. The perforated leaves allow light and flow to pass through, creating movement rather than blocking sightlines. Fish pass through the leaf lattice easily, and biofilm develops along the veins.

Aquascaping tip
Use as a single specimen or focal plant in medium to large aquariums where its structure can stand alone without crowding.

Water parameters
Temperature: 68–75°F preferred
pH: 6.0–7.5
GH: soft to moderate
KH: low to moderate

Stable, cooler water is more important than chasing exact numbers. Prolonged high temperatures reduce longevity.

Light requirements
Medium light. Too little light produces weak, elongated leaves. Excessive light combined with heat accelerates decline. Balanced lighting produces strong, well-defined lattice structure.

CO₂ requirements
Not required, but beneficial. CO₂ improves leaf size and overall vigor when temperature and nutrients are appropriate.

Nutrient requirements
Primarily a root feeder. The bulb requires nutrients in the substrate. Root tabs are strongly recommended. Water column fertilization supports leaf growth but is secondary to substrate nutrition.

Tank placement
Midground to background depending on aquarium depth. Provide open vertical space and moderate water movement. Avoid crowding the bulb with aggressive root systems.

Why aquarists keep it
Because nothing else looks like it. The lace leaf creates visual depth, movement, and negative space that no standard stem or rosette plant can replicate. It rewards patience and proper conditions rather than constant trimming.
