Description
Limnophila aromatica (Limnophila aromatica)
Species Background
Limnophila aromatica is native to Southeast Asia, where it grows along flooded margins and shallow wetlands. The plant is also known outside aquariums for its distinct aroma when grown emersed, where it is traditionally used as a culinary herb.
Growth Behavior
Upright stem plant with moderate to fast growth. Trimming encourages strong lateral branching, allowing it to form dense, bushy groups rather than single tall stems.
Size and Growth Form
• Height: 10 to 20 inches
• Spread: 4 to 8 inches
• Structure: upright, fine-leafed stems
Leaves are narrow with green to bronze upper surfaces and a clearly visible purple underside, a defining feature of this species. Color intensity increases with brighter lighting.
Aquascaping Tip
Used as a midground or background plant to add fine texture and color contrast behind broader leaf plants or hardscape.
Water Parameters
• Temperature: 72 to 82 °F
• pH: 5.5 to 7.5
• GH: 2 to 10
• KH: 0 to 5
Light Requirements
Medium to high light.
COâ‚‚ Requirements
COâ‚‚ is optional.
Nutrient Requirements
Primarily a water column feeder.
Tank Placement
Midground to background.
Why Aquarists Keep It
Kept for its fine texture, fast response to trimming, distinct purple leaf undersides, and its unique crossover identity as both an ornamental aquatic plant and an aromatic herb when grown emersed.
