Description
Species Background
Ludwigia palustris is native to wetlands, marshes, and slow-moving waters across North America and parts of Europe. It naturally grows both submerged and emersed along shorelines and floodplains. The ‘Green’ form is a cultivated selection valued for its consistent bright green coloration rather than the typical red tones seen in other Ludwigia varieties.
Growth Behavior
Stem plant that grows vertically with steady side branching. It absorbs nutrients primarily from the water column and responds quickly to stable conditions, forming dense groups when trimmed regularly.
Size and Growth Form
Typically reaches 8–16 inches in height with a bushy, upright structure. Leaves are small, rounded, and tightly spaced along the stem, creating a clean, compact look. Fish move easily through the stems while shrimp graze along the leaf surfaces.
Aquascaping Tip
Works well as a midground-to-background grouping where its bright green color contrasts against darker plants or hardscape.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 68–80°F
pH: 6.0–7.5
GH: 3–12
KH: 2–8
Light Requirements
Medium to high light. Higher light promotes tighter growth and more compact spacing between leaves.
CO₂ Requirements
Optional but beneficial. CO₂ improves density, growth speed, and overall fullness.
Nutrient Requirements
Primarily water column feeder. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy growth and color.
Tank Placement
Midground to background. Suitable for planted tanks where structure and contrast are needed.
Why Aquarists Keep It
Valued for its clean green coloration, reliable growth, and ability to balance layouts that lean too heavily on reds or darker tones. It provides structure without overpowering the scape and offers natural grazing surfaces for shrimp.
