Metal Dragon Betta (Betta splendens) is a selectively bred form of the Siamese fighting fish, a species native to shallow freshwater habitats across Southeast Asia. Wild Betta splendens are associated with rice paddies, floodplains, marshes, ditches, and slow-moving vegetated waters where oxygen levels can drop and water movement is minimal. These environments shaped the species into a hardy surface-breathing fish capable of living in warm, still, plant-heavy freshwater systems.

The Metal Dragon variety is not a wild color form but the result of ornamental betta breeding focused on dense metallic scaling. The “Dragon” trait creates thick, opaque, armor-like scales across the body, while the metal coloration adds a reflective sheen over darker red and black tones. This gives the fish a plated look that separates it from traditional betta strains with softer, more transparent body coloration.

Like other domesticated bettas, the Metal Dragon Betta still carries the territorial behavior of its wild ancestors. Males are best kept alone or in carefully managed setups where they are not forced to compete with other long-finned or aggressive fish. Its bold color, heavy scaling, and interactive behavior make it a strong display fish for a focused betta aquarium.
