Description
Midnight Black Ram
Scientific name: Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (selectively bred black morph)
Species Background
The Midnight Black Ram is a selectively bred dark morph of the German Blue Ram, refined for its deep charcoal to near jet black coloration. This morph is entirely tank bred and shares the same South American dwarf cichlid lineage as standard rams. While the look is modern and dramatic, the biology is unchanged. It is still a warm water, soft water leaning species that rewards attentive care.
Behavior and Temperament
Peaceful and inquisitive, with the classic ram personality. Midnight Black Rams are calm in community settings and do best with gentle tankmates. Mild territorial behavior can appear during breeding, but aggression is limited and short lived. They spend much of their time near the bottom, exploring surfaces and interacting with their environment.
Adult Size
Adults typically reach 2.5 to 3 inches.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 80 to 86°F
pH: 5.5 to 7.2
GH: 1 to 8 dGH
KH: 0 to 4 dKH
These rams tolerate slightly broader ranges than wild types, but consistency is critical. Warm, stable water is far more important than chasing exact numbers.
Diet
Omnivorous with a strong preference for protein rich foods. Feed a mix of high quality micro pellets, soft granules, frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional live foods. A varied diet supports coloration, immune health, and breeding behavior.
Tank Requirements
A minimum of 20 gallons for a pair is recommended. Fine sand or smooth substrate is ideal, along with plants, wood, and hardscape that break lines of sight. Filtration should be efficient but gentle. Because of the elevated temperatures required, good oxygenation and steady circulation are important.
Why They’re Popular
Midnight Black Rams offer the intelligence and personality of a ram with a bold, high contrast appearance. Their dark coloration stands out sharply against planted aquariums and light substrates, giving a refined, minimalist look. They appeal to aquarists who value interaction, subtle behavior, and visual presence in a compact cichlid.
When kept in warm, stable conditions with attentive care, they develop strong coloration, confident behavior, and become a true focal point in the aquarium.
