Description
Species Background
The Mustard Spot Pleco, commonly referred to by the code LDA031, is a small loricariid catfish in the genus Peckoltia. It originates from tributaries of the Amazon basin in South America, where it inhabits rocky shorelines, submerged wood, and areas with moderate water movement. The species is named for the distinctive yellow-gold speckling across its dark body, giving it the appearance of scattered mustard seeds.
LDA031 is one of the smaller ornamental plecos in the trade and is well suited to community aquariums compared with larger pleco species.
Behavior and Temperament
Mustard Spot Plecos are peaceful bottom dwellers that spend most of their time grazing on surfaces and resting in caves or driftwood. They are typically shy during bright lighting and become more active during the evening hours. Territorial behavior is mild and usually limited to defending a preferred cave.
They coexist well with peaceful community fish and rarely disturb tankmates.
Adult Size
Adults typically reach 3.5–4 inches.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.8
GH: 3–12 dGH
KH: 1–6 dKH
Diet
Mustard Spot Plecos are omnivorous grazers. A balanced diet should include high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and prepared foods designed for bottom-feeding catfish. Supplement with vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, or spinach. Occasional protein foods like frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp help maintain healthy growth.
Tank Requirements
A 20–30 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended. Provide driftwood, rock structures, and multiple caves so individuals can establish secure resting areas. Moderate water movement and good filtration are beneficial. Sand or fine gravel substrates are ideal for natural foraging behavior.
Suitable Tankmates
They coexist well with peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and other non-aggressive community fish. Avoid housing them with highly territorial bottom dwellers competing for caves.
Why They’re Popular
These plecos are popular because they combine striking yellow spotting, a manageable adult size, and a calm temperament, making them an excellent pleco choice for planted tanks and community aquariums.
