Description

Species Background

Neon Gold Tetras are a selectively bred variant of small South American tetras, descended from species native to slow, plant-lined tributaries across the Amazon basin. The gold sheen is a stabilized captive line, not a wild locality trait. Tank-raised generations adapt easily to a wide range of freshwater parameters, including moderately hard water.

Behavior and Temperament

These are peaceful schooling fish that feel secure in groups of at least six, though larger groups bring out better color and tighter swimming patterns. They spend most of their time in the mid-water zone, weaving through plants and open space in coordinated movements. They coexist well with other small, peaceful fish that aren’t overly boisterous.

Adult Size

Adults typically reach around 1.2 inches.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 72 to 80°F, ideal 75 to 78°F
pH: 6.0 to 7.8
GH: 3 to 14
KH: 1 to 8

Diet

They take to almost anything offered: high-quality flakes, micro pellets, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and finely chopped frozen foods. They color up best with regular feedings of micro-protein foods and some natural carotenoid sources.

Tank Requirements

A planted layout brings out their best behavior and helps them show strong metallic gold tones. A 10-gallon tank is the minimum for a small group, though 20 gallons builds far better movement and stability. Provide good filtration, calm flow, and dark substrate or background for contrast. Floating plants help reduce glare and boost confidence.

Suitable Tankmates

Compatible tankmates include other peaceful tetras, rasboras, small rainbowfish, corydoras, and dwarf peaceful cichlids that won’t mistake them for snacks. Avoid fin-nippers and anything overly large or aggressive.

Why They’re Popular

Aquarists enjoy them for their shimmering gold body, tight schooling patterns, and overall easygoing nature. They fit perfectly in planted aquascapes and bring a lot of motion without adding drama.
