Description
Species Background
Cryptocoryne wendtii comes from Sri Lanka, where it grows along slow streams and shaded forest waters with silty substrates and gentle flow. The red form is a cultivated variant selected for bronze to reddish leaf tones rather than true wild red pigmentation. It is farm raised, tank adapted, and far more forgiving than its reputation suggests.
Growth Behavior
A classic rosette plant and a true root feeder. Growth is steady rather than fast. Once settled, it expands by sending out runners and forming dense clumps. Like all crypts, it can melt when moved or stressed, then regrow from the roots once conditions stabilize.
Size and Growth Form
Typically 4 to 8 inches tall, sometimes a bit more in lower light. Leaves are lance shaped to slightly ruffled, forming a compact but full rosette. Fish use the leaf bases as shelter and shrimp graze constantly along the surfaces.
Aquascaping Tip
Works best as a midground plant along wood or stone where its darker red brown tones add depth without overpowering the layout.
Water Parameters (Verified)
Temperature: 72 to 82 °F
pH: 6.0 to 7.5
GH: 3 to 12 dGH
KH: 1 to 6 dKH
This species tolerates a wide range because it has been cultivated for decades in varied aquarium conditions.
Light Requirements
Low to medium. Higher light brings more compact growth and deeper coloration. In low light it stays greener and slightly taller.
CO₂ Requirements
Not required. CO₂ improves growth speed and leaf size but is optional.
Nutrient Requirements
Primarily a substrate feeder. A nutrient rich substrate or periodic root tabs make a visible difference. Water column nutrients support overall health but do not replace substrate nutrition.
Tank Placement
Midground. Also works toward the foreground in smaller tanks.
Why Aquarists Keep It
Reliable, calm looking, and adaptable. It provides structure, shelter, and long term stability in planted aquariums without demanding constant trimming.
