Description

Java Fern ‘Narrow’ (Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow’)

Species Background
Microsorum pteropus is native to Southeast Asia, growing attached to rocks and wood along shaded riverbanks and slow-moving forest streams.
‘Narrow’ is a cultivated form selected for slimmer, elongated leaves compared to standard Java Fern.

Growth Behavior
Epiphytic rhizome plant that attaches to wood or stone and feeds from the water column.
The rhizome must remain exposed. Burying it in substrate will cause rot.
Growth is slow to moderate and very stable once established.

Size and Growth Form
Typically grows 8–12 inches tall.
Leaves are long, narrow, and slightly arching, creating a lighter, more delicate profile than standard Java Fern.
Forms dense clumps over time.

Aquascaping Tip
Attach to driftwood or stone to create vertical texture without adding visual bulk, especially useful in nature-style layouts.

Water Parameters
Temperature: 72–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.5
GH: 3–12
KH: 2–8

Light Requirements
Low to medium.
Stronger light encourages tighter growth but also increases algae risk on older leaves.

CO₂ Requirements
Not required.
CO₂ improves growth speed but is optional.

Nutrient Requirements
Water-column feeder.
Requires liquid fertilizers. Root tabs are not used.

Tank Placement
Attached to wood or rock.
Midground to background depending on tank height.

Why Aquarists Keep It
Offers a cleaner, more refined look than standard Java Fern while keeping the same durability and low maintenance.
Provides excellent grazing and shelter for shrimp and small fish.
