Ember Tetra

Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae) is a small South American characin from the Araguaia River basin in Brazil, where it is associated with slow-moving tributaries, shallow margins, dense vegetation, and quieter floodplain-style waters. In the wild, these environments provide plant cover, fine natural debris, and softer edges where small schooling fish can stay protected while foraging.

Its orange-red coloration, translucent body edges, and tiny size make the Ember Tetra one of the most recognizable nano schooling fish in the aquarium hobby. Rather than relying on size or aggression, this species uses group movement, cover, and quick schooling behavior as its main defense, which is why it looks and behaves best when kept in proper numbers.

Ember Tetras are peaceful community fish and are best kept with other small, gentle species that will not outcompete or intimidate them. They are especially effective in planted aquariums, nano communities, and calm freshwater displays where their group movement creates a warm, active glow without overwhelming the tank.
