Description

Species Background
The Pink Dragon Blood Peacock is a selectively bred hybrid within the Aulonocara group of Lake Malawi cichlids. Dragon Blood lines were developed through controlled breeding programs to enhance red and pink coloration while maintaining the calm temperament typical of many peacock cichlids. These fish descend from Malawi’s sand-dwelling Aulonocara species, which naturally inhabit sandy areas between rocky zones where they use sensory pores in their heads to detect prey beneath the substrate.

Modern Dragon Blood varieties, including the Pink Dragon strain, are entirely tank-bred and are known for their intense coloration and adaptability to stable home aquarium conditions.

Behavior and Temperament
Pink Dragon Blood Peacocks are generally peaceful for African cichlids. Males display bright coloration and may show mild territorial behavior toward other males, especially during breeding displays.

They coexist well with other moderately peaceful Malawi cichlids such as:
Peacock cichlids, peaceful Haplochromines, and similarly tempered Malawi species.

Avoid housing them with highly aggressive Mbuna or very timid community fish.

Adult Size
Adults typically reach 5–6 inches, with males becoming larger and more intensely colored than females.

Water Parameters
Temperature: 76–82°F
pH: 7.4–8.6
GH: 8–20 dGH
KH: 6–12 dKH

Diet
Pink Dragon Blood Peacocks are carnivorous micro-predators that naturally feed on small invertebrates. In aquariums they accept a wide range of prepared foods.

Recommended foods include:
High-quality cichlid pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, and other protein-rich foods.

Avoid excessive fatty foods and limit feeder fish.

Tank Requirements
A 55-gallon aquarium or larger is recommended for adult specimens. Provide open swimming space with rock structures or caves that create territories and visual barriers.

A sandy or fine substrate is ideal, reflecting their natural habitat where Aulonocara species sift sand while hunting for food. Strong filtration and consistent water quality are important for long-term health.

Why They’re Popular
These fish are popular because they combine the bold personality of African cichlids with striking pink-red coloration rarely seen in freshwater species. Their manageable size, relatively calm temperament, and vivid display colors make them a favorite centerpiece fish in Malawi community aquariums.
