Description

Species Background
The Ornate Bichir is a large predatory fish native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa. These ancient fish belong to the Polypteridae family, a lineage that dates back over 60 million years. They inhabit slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and heavily vegetated waters where they cruise along the bottom searching for prey. Ornate Bichirs possess primitive lungs that allow them to gulp atmospheric oxygen, enabling them to survive in low-oxygen environments.

Behavior and Temperament
Ornate Bichirs are generally calm but predatory. They spend much of their time slowly patrolling the bottom of the aquarium and exploring structures. They are not aggressive toward fish they cannot swallow but will eat smaller tankmates. Despite their intimidating appearance, they tend to ignore similarly sized fish and are more interested in cruising than causing drama.

Adult Size
Adults typically reach 18–24 inches in length.

Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–82°F
pH: 6.2–7.8
GH: 4–15 dGH
KH: 2–10 dKH

Diet
Ornate Bichirs are carnivores that prefer meaty foods. Suitable foods include sinking carnivore pellets, frozen shrimp, silversides, earthworms, krill, and pieces of fish. They rely heavily on smell when feeding and usually hunt at dusk or nighttime.

Tank Requirements
Due to their large adult size, Ornate Bichirs require spacious aquariums. A tank of at least 125 gallons is recommended for adults. Provide a soft substrate, caves, driftwood, and shaded areas where they can rest during the day. Secure lids are essential because bichirs are strong and capable escape artists. Moderate filtration and stable water conditions are more important than strong current.

Compatibility
Compatible tankmates include large cichlids, larger barbs, silver dollars, datnoids, and other large peaceful fish that cannot be swallowed. Avoid small fish, shrimp, or slender species that may be viewed as prey.

Why They’re Popular
These fish are popular because of their prehistoric appearance and fascinating behavior. Their armored scales, dragon-like fins, and slow deliberate movement give them a striking presence in large aquariums. Many aquarists enjoy them as centerpiece predators in African or mixed large-fish displays.
