Description
Species Background
Crowntail Bettas are a selectively bred variety of the species Betta splendens, originally developed in Indonesia in the late 1990s. The strain was created by enhancing the ray extensions in the fins, producing the distinctive “crown” appearance where the webbing between the fin rays is reduced. Like all domestic bettas, their wild ancestors come from slow-moving waters in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam such as rice paddies, canals, and shallow floodplains.
Behavior and Temperament
Crowntail Bettas share the classic personality of Betta splendens: curious, interactive, and territorial toward other male bettas. Males should be kept alone or with carefully selected peaceful tankmates in larger aquariums. They spend much of their time cruising the mid and upper water column and often investigate movement outside the tank.
Adult Size
Adults typically reach 2.5–3 inches in length.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 76–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.8
GH: 3–12 dGH
KH: 1–6 dKH
Diet
Carnivorous micropredators that thrive on a varied protein-rich diet. High-quality betta pellets or micro-granules should form the staple diet, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
Tank Requirements
A 5-gallon or larger aquarium is recommended for a single Crowntail Betta. Provide gentle filtration, calm water movement, and plenty of resting areas near the surface such as plants or driftwood. Dense planting and floating plants help mimic their natural habitat and make them feel secure.
Why They’re Popular
Crowntail Bettas are popular because their dramatic spiked fins create one of the most striking silhouettes among betta varieties. Combined with bold colors and engaging personalities, they make a centerpiece fish for smaller aquariums.
