Red Tiger Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a selectively bred South American cichlid descended from wild oscars native to slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and submerged forest systems throughout the Amazon Basin. In nature, oscars inhabit warm, structure-heavy environments with roots, branches, leaf litter, and soft substrates where they hunt smaller fish, insects, and crustaceans while using cover for ambush and territorial control.

The Red Tiger variety was developed through ornamental line breeding to intensify irregular red and orange patterning over a dark base body. Pattern coverage varies from fish to fish, with some displaying heavier red barring while others develop fragmented tiger-style markings across the flanks and dorsal region as they mature. Like wild oscars, they are highly intelligent cichlids that recognize movement outside the aquarium and quickly associate feeding routines with their keeper.

Red Tiger Oscars are large, interactive fish best suited for spacious aquariums with robust filtration and equally durable tank mates. Their combination of heavy-bodied movement, territorial behavior, and variable tiger-style coloration makes them one of the most recognizable large freshwater cichlids kept in home aquariums without losing the behavioral traits that made wild oscars popular in the first place.
