Black Schultzi Corydoras

Black Schultzi Corydoras (Osteogaster schultzei “Black”) are a dark, line-bred cory catfish also known in the aquarium trade as the Black Venezuelan Cory, Black Venezuela Cory, or Venezuelan Black Cory. This strain is connected to the broader South American cory group, where small armored catfish naturally live along soft-bottomed streams, floodplain edges, and quiet shallow waters with sand, leaf litter, roots, and gentle cover.

The black form is best understood as an established aquarium strain rather than a simple wild locality fish. Selective breeding produced the deep charcoal to black coloration that separates it from standard bronze-type cory cats, while still keeping the classic cory body shape, armored plates, barbels, and active substrate-sifting behavior. Under aquarium lighting, the color can shift from deep black to dark bronze or reddish tones depending on age, condition, and background.

Black Schultzi Corydoras are peaceful, social bottom dwellers that do best in groups and bring steady movement to the lower level of the aquarium. Their dark color stands out especially well against sand, plants, driftwood, and natural aquascapes, giving community tanks a cleaner, more dramatic bottom-dwelling species without adding aggression or difficult care requirements.
