Chili Oscar

Chili Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a selectively bred Oscar variety developed from the large South American cichlid native to the Amazon, Orinoco, and nearby river systems. In the wild, Oscars live in slow-moving freshwater habitats with soft bottoms, submerged branches, roots, and sheltered margins where structure plays a major role in their behavior.

The Chili Oscar form is bred for stronger red-orange coloration across the body while keeping the heavy-bodied shape, large head, and expressive behavior that make Oscars recognizable. Like other Oscars, it is intelligent, food-motivated, and highly aware of its surroundings, which is why stable housing and appropriate tank mates matter more than trying to treat it like a small community fish.

Chili Oscars are best kept with space, structure, and tank mates that are large enough to avoid being bullied or eaten. They can become territorial, especially as they mature, but they are also one of the most interactive large cichlids in the aquarium hobby, making them a strong centerpiece fish for keepers who want a bold, personable display species.
