🌿 Natural Habitat & Behavior
Crown Pearlscale Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a selectively bred fancy goldfish variety descended from domesticated goldfish lines first developed in China. Unlike wild-type carp-shaped goldfish, fancy varieties were bred for rounded bodies, double tails, unusual scale structure, and ornamental head growth, making them aquarium-bred fish rather than a form found naturally in the wild.
The Pearlscale trait is defined by raised, bead-like scales that give the body a rounded, armored texture. The “Crown” form adds a fleshy head growth similar to the wen seen on oranda-type goldfish, creating a more compact and ornamental appearance. This body shape makes the fish slower and less athletic than long-bodied goldfish, so it is best understood as a delicate fancy variety rather than a fast pond-style swimmer.
Crown Pearlscale Goldfish are peaceful, social fish that do best with other slow-moving fancy goldfish. They should not be mixed with fast single-tail goldfish, koi, aggressive tank mates, or fin nippers that may outcompete them or damage the head growth. Their round body, pearled scales, and crown-like head structure make them one of the more distinctive fancy goldfish varieties for aquarists who want a calm, ornamental display fish.
