Description
Mystery Snails (Pomacea diffusa) are freshwater apple snails native to slow-moving and heavily vegetated waters in South America, especially warm floodplains, wetlands, ponds, and quiet river margins where they graze on biofilm, soft algae, and decaying plant material. In aquariums, they are valued for their calm movement, visible grazing behavior, and ability to fit into peaceful community setups without bothering fish.
Unlike many pest snails, Mystery Snails grow larger, have a distinct rounded shell, and are often kept intentionally as ornamental cleanup animals. They use a muscular foot to move across glass, substrate, wood, and plant leaves, and they also have a siphon that allows them to take in air from the surface while remaining mostly submerged.
Mystery Snails are peaceful and easy to observe, making them a strong choice for planted tanks, shrimp-safe aquariums, and calm community tanks. Their shell color can vary by variety, but the care, behavior, and aquarium role stay consistent across the common Mystery Snail types sold in the trade.
