Ornate Bichir (Polypterus ornatipinnis) is a primitive freshwater predator native to tropical Africa, with a natural range centered around the Congo River basin and reported populations from the Lake Tanganyika and Lake Rukwa drainages. In the wild, it inhabits calm rivers, swamps, marshes, ponds, and lake margins where cover, slow water, and soft bottom structure support ambush-style movement and shelter.

This species has the ancient body plan that makes bichirs so different from most modern aquarium fish. The long body, separate dorsal finlets, heavy ganoid scales, and lung-like air-breathing ability reflect a lineage adapted for low-oxygen, shallow freshwater habitats where surfacing for air can be an advantage.

Ornate Bichirs are mostly bottom-oriented, deliberate, and predatory rather than fast or openly aggressive. They are best understood as large oddball fish that need space, secure cover, and tank mates too large to be viewed as food, making them a strong choice for keepers building a serious predator or oddball freshwater setup.
